…this as a hobby. The value of good conversations with a dedicated group of Practicing Rubyists was something that I didn't anticipate the first time around with this service, but is something I've planned for from the very beginning with the relaunched version. I want my readers to feel like I am accessible and willing to give them personalized attention as they work through the content I'm writing. All of this will be possible, and even financially sustainable, with only a couple …
In anticipation of a large group of new Rubyists coming to Chicago in October via Code Academy , I thought it would be helpful to put together a resource for various meetups around Chicago.
First, you might consider signing up for Geek Out Chicago! — a monthly newsletter of events around Chicago.
Here's a list of meetups that occur at least monthly:

…of arguments can lead to broken code in remote places in your codebase. For all of these reasons, Rubyists tend to prefer hash-based pseudo-keyword arguments for all but the most straightforward method signatures.
However, introducing keyword arguments isn't the only way to reduce CoP in method signatures to CoN. Another alternative that is perhaps underused is to simply create objects that provide all the necessary attributes that you would typically use a hash for. In this case, we …

…conferences still have a tremendous amount of value, it's nice to have events like RailsCamp, where there still exists a profound intimacy among coders. For a passionate Rubyist it doesn't get much better than a laptop, a local gem repository, good food, games, and a cabin in the woods with a group of other passionate Rubyists. It's the stuff geek summers are made of. You can view additional photos on our Flickr page !
Greetings, faithful Rubyists! It's August, and the conference scene is about to blow up--we're fresh from Washington D.C., where we were pleased to participate in JRubyConf 2011 ! There were many talented and engaged people at that conference, and presentations by the JRuby core team were nice bookends for a great roster of speakers. We'd like to thank the good people at EdgeCase for all their hard work, and give a special shout-out to Amazon Web Services, who sponsored the now-legendary whisky tasting.
…Ruby community because, more than any other community in which I've participated, Rubyists are singularly driven to use not just good-enough tools but ideal tools. Ruby is a community of chaotic reinvention, a community that will jump off a cliff just to try out a new brand of parachute. It's that passion that draws me to the community, that makes me feel like the things that I do matter. It's also that passion that can cut to the bone.
People are inevitably going to form opinions …
